Board of Education Summary (added 5/21/10)

A brief summary of the Board of Education meeting May 20, 2010

  • Transportation Audit – The transportation audit report was presented to the Board by the TransPar Group auditors. Following Board discussion, a timeline for next steps was recommended by Administration. This timeline follows recommendations set forth in the audit to seek additional information through the development and posting of a Request for Proposal (RFP). The RFP process will provide the Board and Administration the information necessary to conduct a cost analysis comparing outsourcing transportation service with in-district service. The Transportation Audit Report and timeline are posted on the District Web site.
  • Revised 2009-2010 School Calendar – The Board approved the Revised School Calendar for 2009-2010. Below are the changes related to the current school calendar (2009-2010):
  1. One emergency day included in the 2009-2010 school calendar is deleted so that the last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 10, 2010. No days were added that would have resulted in the emergency closing of schools.
  2. Students in grades one through five will attend their respective schools from 9:05am to10:05am on June 10th.
  3. Sixth and seventh grade students will attend their school from 7:55am to 8:55am on Thursday June 10th.

Parent/Teacher Satisfaction Surveys – A Change from Past Practice (added 5/14/10)

In recent years the District developed and administered a satisfaction survey to parents and teachers. For a number of reasons, there wasn’t a very large return rate of the surveys. When only a small number of surveys are returned, it is difficult to generalize any findings and target appropriate areas for improvement. We will no longer be administering that particular survey. However, collecting satisfaction survey data is very important to help guide and measure improvement for the District. To improve the process of collecting this information, the Board of Education approved the following Administrative recommendation to the District’s 2010-2015 Revised Strategic Plan: “Conduct satisfaction surveys beginning February 2011 and report findings to determine student, staff, and parent perceptions of our schools and the District – every other year on the odd-numbered years.” The Administration will work with a survey company to develop the questions and oversee administering the survey to ensure comprehensive, confidential data collection with comparables that can guide our ongoing performance improvement efforts.

Transportation News (added 4/1/10)

The District has hired an interim transportation coordinator. His name is Bill Willetts and he will be with us through the duration of the 2009-2010 school year. During this interim timeframe the Board of Education and Administration will be discussing what the next steps will be regarding transportation for the district.

Mr. Willetts comes to the district with extensive transportation knowledge having served as the transportation director for Community Consolidated District 15 in Palatine from 1998-2006 where he directed the daily operations and managed 193 employees for over 13,000 students with 138 buses and 15 schools. During his tenure, the transportation department also received the 2003 Leland E. G. Larson Student Transportation Quality Award, an award given by the National Association of Pupil Transportation recognizing and rewarding school districts that are committed to improving the quality of their school transportation services.

Most recently, Bill has served as an interim transportation director at Community Unit School District 302 (Kaneland).

Earlier in his educational career, Mr. Willetts served administrative roles in Indiana and Montana as principal and assistant principal and worked at the higher education level.

If you see Bill, please welcome him. Thank you.
